RE:                  Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Former Florida Senate President and U.S. Congressman Harry Johnston

On Monday, June 28, 2021, former Florida Senate President and U.S. Congressman Harry Johnston passed away. Johnston served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant, Fourth Armor Division. He served as a member of the Governor’s Special Task Force on Prison Reform and on the Florida Supreme Court’s sentencing committee. Johnston was a member of the Florida Senate from 1974 until 1986 and served as Florida Senate President from 1984 until 1986. During his time in the Florida Senate, he played a large role in the creation of the Growth Management Act. He also served as a U.S. congressman from 1989 until 1997 where he developed an expertise in African diplomacy. Johnston will be remembered for his service at the state, federal, and international level.

 

To honor the memory of former Florida Senate President and U.S. Congressman Harry Johnston, and his service to our state, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the Palm Beach County Courthouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Town Hall of West Palm Beach, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset on Friday, July 2, 2021.
