Dr. Kevin Cairns

Dr. Cairns, of Fort Lauderdale, is the owner and attending physician at Florida Spine Specialists. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at Nova Southeastern University since 2012. Dr. Cairns is a triple board certified, Harvard trained physician with fellowships in Interventional Spine/Pain Medicine (ABA) and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He established a pain initiative that won a national award through the Association of Hospital Medical Education after demonstrating improved pain scores with non-opioid based therapies. Dr. Cairns earned his bachelor’s degree in integrative biology from UC Berkeley. He attended medical school at New York Medical College where he completed a combined MD/MPH program with a focus on public health and management in four years. With an interest in bringing his patients the latest minimally invasive treatment options, Dr. Cairns has been the principal investigator in multiple clinical studies and has dozens of publications in peer reviewed medical journals as well as book chapters. Cairns is appointed to a four-year term.

Dr. Shailesh Gupta

Dr. Gupta, of Coral Springs, is the founder and CEO of Specialty Retina Center. He is a vitreo-retinal surgeon and provides treatment to patients with a variety of diseases including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Broward and Palm Beach County Ophthalmology Societies. He has been a member of the faculty at the University of Florida in Jacksonville, where he was co-director of the vireo-retinal surgery fellowship training program. He earned his bachelor’s from the University of Miami and his doctorate in medicine from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology and fellowship in retina surgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Gupta is appointed to a four-year term.

These appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
